Terminate a Child's Legal Status (From Person Search)

Before you add a new legal status record, you may need to terminate the previous legal status record of the same type (child legal status or agency legal status). For example, you would terminate an agency legal status to terminate the custody episode. When you terminate the custody episode, you also terminate the Title IV-E program eligibility record.

(If you are changing the agency legal status from temporary custody to permanent custody, you do not terminate the legal status record. Instead, you change the legal status type. See Record a child's legal status.)

To terminate a child's legal status, complete the following steps. If you are on the Case Overview screen, begin at the Edit link step below, step 6.

  1. Display the child's person profile.

  2. From the Person Information screen, click the SACWIS History link, which appears above the row of tabs. The SACWIS History screen appears.

  3. Click the Case Member History link. Select the Case ID link. The Case Overview screen appears.

  4. Click on the Legal Custody / Status link in the navigation bar on the right. The Legal Custody and Status Filter Criteria screen appears.

  5. In the Legal Custody and Status table; select the Maintain Custody & Status link from under the Custody Start Date column. The Legal Custody Episode & Status Information screen appears.

  6. Click Edit link next to the legal status you want to terminate. The Child Legal Status Details screen appears.

  7. Complete the Termination Date and Termination Reason fields. Complete the Narrative field.

  8. Click the Save button. The system warns: Terminating the custody episode will terminate the child's Title IV-E/FCM eligibility and send a notification to the CRISE System; and, "Do you wish to continue?"

  9. Click OK. You are returned to the Legal Custody Episode & Status Information screen.

  10. Click Close. You are returned to the Legal Custody and Status Filter Criteria screen.
